I believe that this is a very successful front cover. As it appeals to both students and adults. The use of the schools logo and colour scheme of blues and whites, help to brand the magazine, telling the readers that it was created and owned by the Misbourne school. The use of a school related masthead and a catch slogan can mostly appeal towards younger students and the help of several images of students doing work, can appeal more to adult readers as they notice that even the schools magazine has a childish masthead, it still shows how formal the school really easy. The use of a left third, on the left hand side of the cover, gives a brief intro of what the magazine could of offered to the readers. The date of the magazine and the issue number can help identify when the magazine came out and how far into the series has the magazine started from. It mostly helps the reader know if they are reading old or new information.

Unit 2 Portfolio- Misbourne Second Prospectus
Unit 2 portfolio- Misbourne Second Prospectus
This time around, the style of the schools prospectus has completely changed. Straight away, you can tell that this prospectus is more informal and so it would appeal to students more than adults. The use of different super heros ranging from DC to Marvel with different teacher's faces, photoshoped on top, shows that the school have decided to have a one off, entertaining, front cover, to give the students a laugh. The type of font for the masthead and sub-headings have changed from formal to comic style text. Decreasing the covers formality even more. The sky blue background with clouds isn't something you wouldn't see for a backdrop as most covers don't use images for backgrounds, just a single colour. Overall, you wouldn't see so many colours for a prospectus Usually, a maximum of three colours would only be used for the masted, sub-headings and other text, which the first misbourne prospectus did use. In this case there are lots of different colours, from red to blue and green to yellow, the images also add more colour to the front cover making it brighter. The bright, yellow, star is an iconic image that comic illustrators use to show a "BOW" or "SMASH" to represent an action, something that would grab a readers attention.

Misbourne Magazine- Front Cover Design No.1 |
Pros about the design
- The Schools name represents the masthead which is easy to read and recognisable with the schools slogan under the masthead.
- The layout is very formal. With the schools colours of blue and white for the colour scheme making the front cover suitable for the school's purpose. The use of a left head, can present the necessary information about to be presented in the magazine, without giving away to much detail about the stories.
- The positioning of images helps to present some of the aspects the school has to offer as well as giving some colour and a positive view towards the readers.
- The use of different shapes improves the front cover by making it unique.
Cons about the design
- The masthead could of been improved, with a name that could of really pulled in the target audience. The use of just the schools name and slogan just brands the magazine, not the masthead.
Pros about the design
- The masthead is original with its own slogan. Lockers are a commonly used storage product in schools which students may use to store work, personal items or other peoples properties. Magazines are used to deliver stories and information as a source of media, for readers to enjoy. When I put one and two together, the masthead was the result. The slogan helps to grab the readers attention. Making them to wonder, whats inside the magazine.
- The logo and the schools name has been given a slick redesign put still has the same colour scheme and the schools branded images of swans. This helps to tell the reader that this magazine was created by the Misbourne School and is branded by them. It also shows the readers that what the magazine is about, is of Misbourne material.
- The left head is similar to the last design,
- The layout of images is more creative with one image in front of the other. Used for style and formality.
- In the top right, the date and the number of the magazine can be set. So readers know when the magazine came out and what issue there into.
Cons about the design
- The price will not be include in the final product as schools don't sell magazines or prospectuses to the students of the school.
- The use of more colours, maybe red, could help to add more of a vibe to the magazine. Making it more appealing for students. But still keeping it formal so parents will like as well.
I will be using the second front cover design to model around for my final product. I choice this one because of its slick and unique layout and original masthead. I also believe that this layout and design would best appeal to both younger and older readers.
Above is a mock up of my contents page for my own new design of the Misbourne Schools magazine.

Unit 2 Portfolio- Amersham & Wycombe College Prospectus
The front cover of the prospectus has little information to tell the readers that it is a prospectus. The key aspects of the prospectus are the use of the Colleges name and logo, located in the top right of the cover. As the area around the masthead is clear of any other text or images, it then stands out, to identify the readers that this prospectus is branded by the college. Similar to the Misbourne schools positioning of the masthead. The main image of the four students helps to identify that the prospectus is advertising a happy learning and working environment. Seeing lots of smiles is more reassuring than lots of glum ones. The text, “Full Time Further Education 2013/14”, with the slogan, “Achieve Wonders”, is presented in font of a transparent red circle to show the features, that this prospectus has to offer.
Compared to the Misbourne school’s prospectus front cover, there is more going on in the A&W prospectus than the Misbourne schools prospectus. There’s only three parts to the Misbourne’s front cover. A&W makes it look like there’s more to offer with their prospectus.
The back cover of the prospectus carries on with the same layout and style as the front cover. However, in the bottom left hand corner, they have organised the contact information into a white box to outline where the readers can go to look, or contact, to get further information about the college, once they have gone through the rest of the prospectus. It seems that the image is one long continuous image which stretches onto the front cover. The use of lots of different people, ethnic and age, shows that the college is not discriminating against any one and that it is welcoming students to grow there community, similar to the Misbourne’s prospectus.
Unit 2 Porfolio- Misbourne Prospectus
The Misbourne School Prospectus
The prospectus’s front cover is aimed for parents, as its simple and clear layout shows that it is made for people with a longer attention span, compared to the attention span of a mere student. The branded masthead at the top of the page, clearly states that this is the Misbourne schools prospectus as it is also coloured and styled to fit the schools formality. The one image in the centre of the front cover shows a sensible learning environment, where students seem to be working. This image can help to present the schools dedication to learning and give the parents an insight and make them think whether they could see there child in this school. In the bottom right hand corner, the word prospectus, in big, formal text, helps show the audience that what they’re about to read is a prospectus. With nothing around the text, this helps the readers to identify the purpose of the booklet.
The back of the prospectus is a different story. Besides the single image in the centre of the page and the schools name and slogan just above it, there is now more added information. The use of contact information and address for the school is saved for the back of the prospectus. Purposely, for allowing parents to contact the school if they wish to ask any further questions about the school and the prospectus forces the readers to read through the prospectus to get to even more key information. At the bottom of the page in thick, bold text it even advices the readers to contact the school if they have any queries via the website, address, telephone number and email address.
The image of the young ethnic boy waving, is almost and icon. As it shows that the school accepts ethnic pupils and that the prospectus is not discriminating against any ethnic groups. In my opinion, the boy waving may also be a sign to say, “Thank you for coming to the school and we hope to see you again”, as the school wants to encourage new students to join the Misbourne school and grow there friendly community.
